Battle of The Inner Gods: How to Put the YOU in JanYOUary! (Self Mastery Series) Part 2

Author’s Note:  It’s a new month.  What did you change or shift in your life or business last month?

How was last month better than the same month the year before?

What’s actually different?

I’d encourage you to keep reading if you’re looking to radically be different than you were last year so that your personal growth easily shows up in your business growth.

This self mastery blog series is dedicated you – the profound thinker and doer.

It’s for those who recognize that what they’ve been doing up to this point has been embarrassingly ineffective and bankrupting of their spirit – and they want more to offer to themselves, to others – their communities, society and the world.

But we have to first begin to deal with our inner selves first.

So, if you’re looking for the way overdue transformational shift you need to make this year YOUR YEAR, read on.

I wrote this for you.

(But it won’t make sense if you haven’t read the first blog in this self mastery series.  So, if you need to catch up, read this first.  Read HERE and then come back.)

January, Janus and Jan[YOU]ary…

In 2015, I wrote a blog post on Janus, January and the tradition of making new years resolutions.  I just read some of it in preparing for this post.  And I was pretty impressed by what I saw.  Specifically what impressed me was a section in the blog regarding why and how new year’s resolutions came about.  And in short, they revolved around sacrifice and divine promises to spiritual beings humans wanted to keep their word or promises to.

How far have we fallen from this sacred practice of inner devotion to ourselves and the divine that’s bigger than we are?  Telling ourselves that we’ll eat less and work out more seems to be shallow in comparison to proclaiming something like: “I devote my life this year to inspiring an all youth yoga rally on my block to raise awareness about the benefits of yoga and its impact on the emotional development of young people.”

Let’s Talk About Janus and Being Two-Faced – Oh, Yes I’m Going There!

That said…Here’s a quick 1-2 punch on January, Janus and you.  It’s been noted that January gets its name from the Roman god Janus.  And if you read up on the subject, it has to do with January being sort of a doorway into a new year, separating last year from this one.

So you might say that January is a threshold into a new life or journey that awaits each of us if we see it that way.  But the specific characteristic that I want to focus on for now is the two-faced depiction of Janus.  Many of us I believe are two-faced.  Actually, worse, were more like rubic’s-cube-faced but for now, I’ll address the two faced nature we display.

Ever notice how we’re constantly looking at the past and looking into the future to avoid the pain and mistakes of the past?  Since the past is much more familiar and “safe”…we tend to recreate and reincarnate it into the future. And then get frustrated when it’s not quite what we say we want.

Well, the good news is that you can’t be blamed for this.  The better news is that you’re responsible for what you’re creating.  So, that means what you create you can un-create. And we always create what we imagine – consciously and unconsciously.

Let’s Talk About You – That’s All You Talk About Anyway…

So, if you’re normal adult reader, you’re not looking at your phone, iPad or laptop screen reading this blog to yourself out loud.  You’re reading it in your mind.  Take a moment to …*PAUSE*. Notice how you just stopped reading when you saw the word “Pause”?  Yes.  The voice that paused and stopped is the one you listen to all the time.  And it’s the one that tells you to do this … or do that… or says “yes, that’s it.”  It tells you “That’s safe.”  “That’s good for you.  Yes, take a risk but don’t take one too big.  Stay at your job – it’s got good benefits.” “Or wait till things get settled before looking for something better;” although it kills you to not be respected or have your creative spirit honored daily.

So, yes.  That voice is the one that looks and the past and assists you in painting the future.  And since you’re not aware of it…the future you’re now experiencing is one that you imagined.

So, what would it take to live or create a future that doesn’t look like the past? Is there coaching, tools or resources available to help? The answer is yes.

Wiki note on Janus: In ancient Roman religion and myth, Janus (/ˈdʒeɪnəs/; Latin: Ianus, pronounced [ˈjaː.nus]) is the god of beginnings and transitions,[1] and thereby of gates, doors, doorways, passages and endings. He is usually depicted as having two faces, since he looks to the future and to the past. It is conventionally thought that the month of January is named for Janus (Ianuarius)… Janus presided over the beginning and ending of conflict, and hence war and peace. The doors of his temple were open in time of war, and closed to mark the peace. As a god of transitions, he had functions pertaining to birth and to journeys and exchange.
